FIREFIGHTER TRAINEE

Position Description

 

Class Summary

Under close supervision in a training capacity, to learn to perform firefighting duties used in the suppression of structural, aircraft, wildland and other types of fires; to participate in additional Emergency Medical Technician (EMT)-level training; to learn to perform routine fire prevention activities; and to learn other duties as required.


Distinguishing Characteristics

This is a trainee class. Incumbents attend a departmental academy to develop and demonstrate the minimum qualifications required for entry into a career as a firefighter. Appointment as a Firefighter is based on satisfactory evaluations, graduation from the academy and management's recommendations. Trainees who are not appointed to the class of Firefighter at the end of their academy will be subject to termination of their Trainee status and/or employment at Orange County Fire Authority.


Essential Functions

(These duties are intended to be representative sample of the duties performed by the class)

  • Attends scheduled academy training sessions; learns proper firefighting techniques for fighting structural, aircraft, wildland and other types of fires

  • Receives instruction and participates in field training to learn proper procedures and become proficient in emergency and rescue activities including emergency medical services, extrication, heavy rescue, and other others

  • Learns to perform fire inspections and other fire prevention activities

    Receives additional Emergency Medical Technician (EMT)-level instruction

  • Participates in a physical fitness program.

Minimum Qualifications

Education and Experience: (position requirements at application)

  • Applicants must be at least 18 years of age

  • Possess a high school diploma

  • No experience required

  • Licenses & Certifications: (position requirements at application)

  • Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) certification in the State of California and/or EMT National Registry certification

  • Possession of a valid California Class C Driver License or out of state equivalent.  This classification is subject to enrollment in the California DMV Pull Notice Program, which periodically provides Risk Management with the incumbent's Driver License record and status

  • Must be on the Firefighter Candidate Testing Center’s (FCTC) Statewide Eligibility List (SEL) with a written exam score of 80% or higher as of the close of this recruitment, March 1, 2021

    Skills: (position requirements at entry)

  • The ability to learn firefighting and other emergency care knowledge, techniques and skills through classroom lecture, discussion and field exercises; operate fire and other emergency apparatus and equipment effectively and safely; analyze fire and other emergency situations accurately and take effective action

  • Follow directions and orders of superiors quickly and accurately

  • Read, understand, interpret and apply OCFA policies, rules, laws and ordinances pertaining to fire suppression and prevention

  • Establish and maintain harmonious and effective working relationships with superiors,     subordinates and other employees in emergency and non-emergency situations

  • Speak clearly and write legibly in English

  • Carry out a conditioning program to maintain good physical fitness

Medical Requirements:
Applicants must pass a medical examination for fire personnel whose duties demand good fitness, strength, agility and vision
